It also fits into a strategy to encourage the recruitment of talented people and to ensure they stick around once they see that the culture is open, welcoming and progressive.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW183818826 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n   \n<\/div>\n\n\n<div name=\"module-serie-bloc-related-insights\" class=\"container-px-25 mt-60 lg:mt-100 mb-50 lg:mb-100\">\n    <h2 class=\"h3-dark\">\n            <\/h2>\n    <div class=\"inner-related relative flex flex-wrap justify-between children:w-100% lg:children:w-48% children:mt-25 lg:children:mt-40 lg:mt-15\">\n            <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div name=\"module-insight-bloc-subtitle\" class=\"container-px-25 h2-body mt-50\">\n    Protected characteristics<\/div>\n\n<div name=\"module-insight-bloc-paragraph\" class=\"container-px-25 mt-30 paragraph-body-small lg:mt-20 lg:text-20\">\n    \n    <p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It\u2019s no secret that an individual\u2019s characteristics can influence their treatment and how they advance within the workplace and for this reason, some identity indicators are typically protected by law. These vary by country, but often include the following key areas:\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">race<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, national, social or\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ethnic origin<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">physical appearance<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">disability<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0gender<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">pregnancy<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">family status<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0sexual orientation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0identity<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">age<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">political opinions<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">religion<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">belief<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">philosophy<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">trade union membership<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. However, this does vary considerably around the world, with some parts of the world still lacking significant equality laws.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Below we put the spotlight on the law and legal developments relating to certain protected characteristics in the countries in which we operate:<\/p>\n   \n<\/div>\n\n<div name=\"module-insight-bloc-subtitle\" class=\"container-px-25 h2-body mt-50\">\n    Gender discrimination<\/div>\n\n<div name=\"module-insight-bloc-paragraph\" class=\"container-px-25 mt-30 paragraph-body-small lg:mt-20 lg:text-20\">\n    \n    <p>The COVID-19 pandemic has had a disproportionate impact on women in the workplace, with many women taking on additional caring responsibilities. States and employers will need to be vigilant in the coming months and years to redress this imbalance, and tackle the negative impact of the pandemic on the gender pay gap.
