Legislative reform on leave
Adoption of the bill relating to 1. Amendment to the Labour Code, 2. abrogation of articles 13 to 18 of the amended law of 12 February 1999 relating to the creation of parental leave and leave for family reasons
The Luxembourg’s Council of Government adopted on 29 July 2016 the bill relating to 1. Amendment to the Labour Code, 2. abrogation of articles 13 to 18 of the amended law of 12 February 1999 relating to the creation of parental leave and leave for family reasons.
The bill seeks to amend the legal provisions relating to the following three categories of leave:
- Leave for personal reasons: the proposed amendments would give more time off for a father at the birth of a child.
- Postnatal leave: the bill proposes a general extension of postnatal maternity leave from eight to 12 weeks.
- Leave for family reasons: the bill introduced a new system in which parents have more flexibility to use their days off. Instead of providing two days of leave for family reasons per year which were lost if not used in the specified calendar year, the text provides for a number of days that may be used per age group which each cover several years.
